Abstract

This paper aims to explain how the content of the analysis can be used as a framework for investigating the ideologies contained in the text, especially in the reporting of the election. The problem in the current ideological discourse analysis is that there is no explicit and systematic method of explaining ideology and discourse criticism to be unscientific. The research question in this paper how the content analysis framework is presented in the news? How the content analysis framework consists of a content analysis framework leading to prescriptive objectives in the form of a news content unit? In this paper, research data were taken from the 2018 West Java governor election campaign news text from online newspapers. The results of the research were news content raised topics such as social actors, namely figure and groups, and social practice, namely politics, and social actions. The ideology presented in the news was an imbalance in terms of the frequency of reporting in the news. The imbalance result was related to asymmetric power ideology in the newspaper.

Abstract

In our modern world, multilingualism is a common phenomenon. By broad definition, the term ‘multilingualism’ is the use of two or more languages, either by a person or by a group of speakers. Though there have appeared debates and countless studies along with the dominance of multilingualism in any given society. It is often agreed upon by many scholars that multilingualism can be both a problem and a resource. This research paper aims at illuminating the tension of unity and conflict in multilingualism and linguistic diversity. In doing so, this research focuses on multilingualism in Africa and possible implication for unity and conflict within the continent. This paper discovers that multilingualism can cause a crisis of identity, language loss, the death of a language. It can lead to violence and ethnic clashes. In some cases, it can help foster unity in a country.

Abstract

Some social scientists and philosophers tend to think that 'child abuse' is a socially constructed and culturally relativistic term than an objective phenomenon. This stems from the divergent cultural views of what characterize abuses. This work argues that child abuse necessarily should not be considered as a social construct. Using the textual analytic and critical methods of philosophizing, the work explores a few relevant but intriguing facts of child abuse and more importantly the challenges connected with socially constructed and culturally relativistic conceptions of this phenomenon. The paper submits that; if humans could appeal to 'nature eye-view' they could perceive the natural bonding relationship which culminates in the congenial protection of the young by parents; hence, would agree that any aberration of such relationship would constitute abuse. This work would engage readers to understand child abuse as a prevalent cross-cultural reality, and to that extent, instigate them to condemn it wherever it occurs.

Abstract

Theater has become more popular over the years. It is generally known to people as a building designed for the performance of plays, dances, etc. This paper is aimed at espousing the pertinence of theater in national development, especially in a developing African nation-state like Nigeria. In doing this, the paper identifies and discusses the exploitable prospects and problems that go along with the deployment of theater in enhancing Nigeria’s development. The paper concludes that despite the challenges, theater plays a vital role to play towards creating a reliable, effective, and responsive representative institution and in advancing the frontiers of development of the Nigerian society.

Abstract

The evolution of contemporary Kalabari society reflects the contour of a historical progression of a people who struggled to manage the competing forces of unity and disunity in their existence. As a polity, it evolved from a fishing village to a city-state, to an empire, and to a republic or confederacy. This work examines the role of Oruwari-Briggs House in this evolutionary trajectory from the precolonial through the colonial to the post-colonial period. Methodologically, the work adopts the political economy approach. From oral and archival sources, published and unpublished works, the study demonstrates that the Oruwari-Briggs House played a strategic role in the inter-house rivalry, the formation of groups, and political alliances that culminated in the disintegration of Elem Kalabari, movement of populations to new settlements, the transformation of traditional political institutions, and the emergence of multiple centers of power symbolized by the existence of Amayanapu in contemporary Kalabari as against an Amayanabo for the entire polity in the pre-colonial period.

Abstract

Spirituality connotes praxis informed by religious or faith convictions. This can transform the individual and society at large. Christian spirituality is centered on how a person’s relationship with the God of Jesus Christ informs and directs one’s approach to existence and engagement with the world. The ecosystem concerns humanity and relationship with it is invariably influenced by faith or religious informed praxis. The reality of climate change is convincing many people that humankind’s common homeland needs to be treated with care and respect if created beings are to have a congenial habitat now and in the future. This article avers that Christian spirituality can contribute to eco-friendly behavior through re-formation of the behavior of people and emboldening their goodwill as regards the responsibility of all towards the care of the earth. Finally, this research proffers a three-fold model of eco-spirituality - scriptural, selfcontrol, and sacramental approaches to the earth – as a contribution towards stemming the tide of ecological assaults on creation. Textual analysis is the method used in this research.

Abstract

Xenophobic attacks in South Africa have put to question the authenticity and veracity of Ubuntu philosophy. Remarkably, Ubuntu as a normative philosophy, promotes and conveys the openness and availability of the individuals for the benefits of others, especially in the paradigm of “I” and “others.” This philosophy unequivocally presents an African world view of care for others, the affirmation of the existence of others and the participation of others. Altruism, which is the western version of Ubuntu, encourages show of compassion, generosity, care and living with others. Yet, the resurgence of the xenophobic attack is a signpost of misguided individuals who have lost the traits of personhood and otherness, which are central in Ubuntu. Xenophobia breeds violence, hate, destruction of lives and property and threatens peace in Africa. Cognizant of this asymmetry between Ubuntu philosophy and xenophobia lineaments, this work attempts to restate a mutual need for African togetherness and maps a commitment to Ubuntu norms.

Abstract

Since the dawn time of the teaching of ESL/EFL writing, teachers and researchers have established and developed pedagogical approaches for the purpose of meeting the needs of students. This paper highlights some prominent approaches to ESL/EFL writing that have taken place; starting from earlier approaches, such as form-dominated approach, writer-focused approach, content-based approach, and reader oriented approach, followed by collaborative approach, computer-assisted, and lastly social media approach as the state of the art. Advantages and weaknesses of each approach were elaborated. Polarization between process and product oriented of writing were also highlighted. This study contributes to the understanding of pedagogical approaches that teachers may apply based on their specific context and students’ circumstances.
